Poland detects object in airspace believed to be an observation balloon

Poland’s defense minister said on Saturday that an object coming from the direction of Belarus has been detected in Polish airspace and is likely to be an observation balloon.

The minister said on his “Twitter” account that radar contact with the object had been lost near Rypin, a town in northwestern Poland, 143 kilometers from the capital.

The communications adviser of the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces, Ewa Zlotnicka, told TVN24 that searches had begun near Rypin and that a helicopter, drones and land groups of the Territorial Defense Forces were involved.

The object was spotted around 8:30 p.m. local time on Friday near Bialowieza, a town close to the border between Poland and Belarus.

This Saturday at 12:30 a.m., there was monitoring, but the object was no longer visible, Zlotnicka told the television station.

Since the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine, there have been two raids on Polish airspace.

In November, two Polish citizens were killed when a rocket crashed in the east of the country.

Polish political and military officials are also being questioned about another object that landed on the territory in December 2022, but was only discovered in a forest by a civilian in April.

According to the authorities, no traces of explosives were found at the location where the aerial object was discovered.
