Ukraine said on Saturday it had recaptured “more than 10 positions” from Russia on the outskirts of Bakhmut, the epicenter of fighting for several months and the target of the Ukrainian advance in recent days.
“Today [sábado], our units captured more than 10 enemy positions in the north and south of the Bakhmut area”, said on the social network Telegram Deputy Secretary of Defense Hanna Maliar, according to whom “fierce fighting” continues in the center of the city. According to the Ukrainian deputy minister, quoted by the France-Presse agency (AFP), “enemy soldiers were captured”.
Kiev has been claiming progress around Bakhmut for several days after several months of fighting, while Moscow claims to be making progress in the city, which it largely controls.
According to Hanna Maliar, Russian troops “have gathered there and are trying to advance, destroying everything in their path”.
Observers question the strategic scope of the city’s capture for Russia, but it allows Moscow to score a victory after several setbacks.
There, the Wagner paramilitary group is supported by the Russian army, although its leader, businessman Evgeny Prigozhin, regularly accuses the military hierarchy of not giving his men enough ammunition to capture Bakhmut.
