France tonight announced dozens of light tanks and armored vehicles for the Ukrainian army, along with training for the soldiers who use them.
In a joint statement, French President Emmanuel Macron and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also called for new sanctions against Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.
“In the coming weeks, France will train and equip several battalions with dozens of armored vehicles and light tanks, including the AMX-10RC,” the statement said.
Paris will also focus “on supporting Ukraine’s air defense capabilities to defend its population against Russian attacks”.
Ukraine and France further agree on “the need to step up collective pressure on Russia through new sanctions to weaken Russia’s ability to continue its illegal war of aggression.”
The announcement came after Zelensky flew to France late on Sunday and joined Macron for dinner at the Élysée Palace.
“Paris. With each visit, Ukraine’s defense and offensive capabilities expand,” Zelensky tweeted as he flew to Villacoublay Air Force Base.
“Ties with Europe are getting stronger and pressure on Russia is increasing,” he added.
