Britain left a warning to Russia on Monday that it will continue to support Ukraine militarily in the long term, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said after a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Responding to Russia, which today criticized the UK’s supply of more weapons to Ukraine, warning it would cause “even more destruction”, Sunak promised that “there will be more support in the future”.
“I think it’s important for the Kremlin to know that we’re not going to back down. We’re here for the long haul. We’re standing firm in defending Ukraine, not only now to take back its rightful territory, but also to ensure that Ukraine will have the means to defend himself in the future,” the British ruler told a group of journalists at the Checkers Court country residence, about 60 kilometers from London.
The two leaders had been meeting for around three hours following an unexpected visit by Zelensky this morning to the UK to meet “friend Rishi”. The Ukrainian leader stressed the importance of the British in expanding kyiv’s military capabilities.
The Russian military offensive on Ukrainian territory, launched on February 24 last year, plunged Europe into what is considered the most serious security crisis since World War II (1939-1945).
