The Cannes Film Festival, which starts this Tuesday in the south of France, has a film by Pedro Costa in the official selection and other Portuguese films in parallel programming.

In an edition in which films by Martin Scorsese, Wes Anderson, Pedro Almodóvar, Ken Loach or Nanni Moretti will be released, Cannes will have seven directors in competition -a record number- with Alice Rohrwacher, Jessica Hausner, Kaouther Ben Hania, Justine Triet , Catherine Breillat, Ramata-Toulaye Sy, and Catherine Corsini.

Out of competition, Pedro Costa will premiere the film “As Filhas do Fogo”, marking the fifth time that the Portuguese director has been present at Cannes.

According to the production company Clarão Companhia, “As Filhas do Fogo” is a short film performed by the singers Elizabeth Pinard, Alice Costa and Karyna Gomes, with Os Músicos do Tejo, directed by maestro and harpsichordist Marcos Magalhães.

Also out of competition, Cannes will screen “Eureka”, by Argentinean Lisandro Alonso, co-produced by Rosa Filmes.

The 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival opens with “Jeanne du Barry”, by the French director Maiwenn, with actor Johnny Depp in the role of Louis XV.

In the “Un Certain Regard” section there will be the film “A Flor do Buriti”, by the Brazilian director Renée Nader Messora and the Portuguese João Salaviza, who returned to film with the indigenous Kraho^, from Brazil, after “Chuva é Cantoria in the Village of the Dead”.

In the Filmmakers’ Fortnight, Filipa Reis and João Miller Guerra will premiere their second feature film, “Légua”, and will commemorate the 30th anniversary of the premiere of “Vale Abraão”, by Manoel de Oliveira, with the presence of actress Leonor Silveira and producer Paulo Branco.

Also in this program, in the initiative “La Factory des Cinéastes”, four short films will be highlighted, co-produced by Bando à Parte with young structures, technicians and directors from the north of Portugal.

“Corpos Cintilantes”, director Inês Teixeira’s first film about adolescence, is part of the Critics’ Week short film competition.

The official competition jury is chaired by the Swedish director Ruben Ostlund.

Actor Michael Douglas will receive a lifetime achievement award and actor Harrison Ford will be honored with the premiere of “Indiana Jones and the Marker of Destiny,” directed by James Mangold.

The Cannes festival ends on the 27th.
