Two-thirds of Cuban voters supported in a referendum the Family Code promoted by the Government of Miguel Díaz-Canel, which allows the legalization of marriage between people of the same gender and surrogacy, according to official data released this Monday.
The president of the National Electoral Council (CEN), Alina Balseiro Gutiérrez, indicated that, of the valid votes, 66.78% (more than 3.9 million) approved the current reform, while 33.13% (more than 1.9 million).
The result, which will not change despite the fact that the count is still going on in some districts, places the level of participation at around 74%. The head of the CEN congratulated the population for their involvement in the process, indicated the average officers
Through a video uploaded to Twitter, President Miguel Díaz-Canel also welcomed the results of the consultation.
The referendum on the Family Code was the first aimed at private law, and the third in general terms to be held in Cuba since the triumph of the Revolution in 1959.
The extensive text, a model law on family law that modifies the one in force since 1975, includes, in addition to same-sex marriage and surrogacy on the island, the adoption of children by homosexual couples and the prohibition of marriage children, even as well as addressing gender-based violence.
Before being approved in July 2022 by the National Assembly (unicameral parliament), version 25 of the Family Code was widely consulted by the Cuban population, between February and April, in around 70,000 neighborhood and municipal assemblies.
This is the only project that has been submitted to a referendum among the 70 legal regulations updated after the introduction of the new Constitution, unlike other laws, including the Penal Code.
The announcement of the results coincided with a meeting headed by Díaz-Canel to examine the evolution of Hurricane Ian, which is approaching the Caribbean island.
