G7 agree on new sanctions against Russian “war enterprise”

G7 leaders meeting in Hiroshima, Japan, on Friday reached an agreement on new sanctions to deprive Russia of resources to aid it in its war effort against Ukraine, the bloc announced in a statement.

The measures are designed to “deprive Russia of the technology, industrial equipment and services of the G7 that support its war effort,” the leaders said in the statement, quoted by the French agency AFP.

The sanctions include restrictions on the export of goods “essential to Russia on the battlefield”, as well as the identification of entities accused of transporting equipment to the front lines on behalf of Moscow.

“We will deprive Russia of the G7 technology, industrial equipment and services that support its war machine,” said the G7, which includes Britain, the United States, Japan, Canada, Germany, France, Italy and the European Union.

The group said it would step up efforts to prevent evasion of the existing sanctions regime, “including targeting entities transporting equipment to the front”.

G7 countries imposed unprecedented sanctions on Russia last year, but were cautious in areas that could hurt European economies still reeling from the Covid-19 pandemic.
