US President Joe Biden announced the delivery of new weapons and ammunition to Ukraine this Sunday during a meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of the G7 summit in the Japanese city of Hiroshima.
The new shipments include “ammunition, artillery, armored vehicles,” Biden said, quoted by the French agency AFP.
Biden did not specify the value of the new package, but a senior US official told Spanish agency EFE it is valued at $375 million (346 million euros)..
The same source said the new aid package includes weapons that the United States has already sent to Ukraine, such as artillery, ammunition, armored vehicles and high-mobility artillery missiles (Himars).
Since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, Washington’s military aid to Kiev has reached $37.3 billion (34.4 billion euros), the US Department of Defense announced today.
The announcement of the new package comes days after Biden authorized Washington’s allies to supply US F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine.
Zelensky thanked Biden for the new military aid and for standing “shoulder to shoulder” with him in the face of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, according to EFE.
The Ukrainian leader was the surprise guest at the summit of the group of the seven most developed democracies, the G7, which brings together Germany, Canada, the United States, France, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom, plus the European Union (EU) .
