Italy’s Etna volcano, the most active in Europe, erupted again this Sunday, spewing an ash plume over the hillside town of Catania, halting traffic at the airport for security reasons.
“Due to Mount Etna’s eruptive activity and the fall of abundant volcanic ash onto the airport floor, flight operations are suspended until safety conditions are restored”the airport management announced in a statement.
Mount Etna’s eruptions often cover the surrounding Sicilian towns with ash. At this point, the crater of the volcano, about 3300 meters high, remains covered with clouds due to the storm currently plaguing the island of Sicily.
The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) confirmed the new eruption, rumblings of which were heard in the towns of Adrano and Biancavilla, on the southwest slope, the direction the cloud was spreading.
The quakes registered a “high level” at 07:20 local time (06:20 in Lisbon) and the eruption caused a shower of ash in Catania.
