A hand grenade, found as a family was going through an elderly relative’s belongings, exploded, killing a man and wounding his two teenage children in the US state of Indiana, police said.
The explosion, which occurred early Saturday morning, killed a 47-year-old man at his home in the northwestern Indiana community of Lakes of the Four Seasons, the Lake County Sheriff’s Department said Monday.
The two sons of the victim, one 14 years old and the other 18, were taken to the hospital with injuries caused by shrapnel.
Sheriff Oscar Martinez said investigators are still trying to determine what caused the grenade to go off at the home about 30 miles southeast of Chicago.
Authorities did not immediately release any additional information about the grenade or why the relative had it.
