European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen travels to the Italian region of Emilia-Romagna on Thursday to express the Union’s solidarity with the devastation caused by last week’s floods.
“President [da Comissão] will travel to the Emilia-Romagna region on Thursday May 25 to witness the devastation caused by last week’s flooding on land and express the support of the European Union,” spokesperson Dana Spinant announced on Twitter.
At least 14 people have died from last week’s floods in Italy.
In just 36 hours it rained the equivalent of six months and 20 rivers overflowed. Several farms and cattle were submerged and the streets were completely muddy.
On Tuesday, the Italian government announced a package of more than two billion euros to help the populations affected by the floods.
