Any advice for the future NATO Secretary General? “Make Sure We Stick Together”

A few months before the end of his term, Jens Stoltenberg leaves a message to the future NATO Secretary General in which he affirms that the biggest challenge ahead of him will be to “maintain unity” among the members of the organization. Stoltenberg admits that this may involve explaining to Washington the relevance of NATO to the United States.

“Now we are 31, soon 32 with Sweden, make sure they understand that even for the United States it is very good to have friends and allies, because a strong NATO is good for Europe, but a strong NATO is also very good for the United States,” Stoltenberg stressed, noting that this occurs “because no other great power has so many friends and allies.”

“Russia and China have none of that,” he says.

A few months before the end of his term, the NATO Secretary General acknowledges that “it is not always easy” to carry out the functions he occupies and leaves a message for whoever comes next.

“My advice to any NATO Secretary General is to make sure we stick together. The first, most important job of the head of the North Atlantic Council, who is the NATO Secretary General, is to keep this family together. And, of course, that’s not always easy. And it never was,” he admitted.

In the current geopolitical context, “in a much more competitive world, with the rivalry of the great powers, including the rise of China”, the NATO Secretary General considers that the importance of the transatlantic link goes beyond the war in Ukraine .

For this reason, he insists: “As long as we stay united – North America and Europe – we can protect each other.”

Jens Stoltenberg participated in a meeting at the Brussels Forum. His term ends in September and Stoltenberg has made it known through his office that he has “no plans” to extend his term.
