Lula da Silva refuses to go to Russia but wants to talk about peace with India, Indonesia and China

Brazilian President Lula da Silva reported Friday that he had spoken with Russian President Vladmir Putin, refusing an invitation to go to Russia, but that Brazil, India, Indonesia and China want to talk about peace in Ukraine.

“I just spoke on the phone with the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin. I thanked him for an invitation to go to the International Economic Forum in St., Indonesia and China, to speak with both sides of the conflict in search of peace”, wrote Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, on the social network Twitter.

The Russian military offensive on Ukrainian territory, launched on February 24 last year, plunged Europe into what is considered the most serious security crisis since World War II (1939-1945).

The conflict has so far caused the flight of more than 14.7 million people -6.5 million internally displaced persons and more than 8.2 million to European countries-, according to the most recent data from the United Nations.

At least 18 million Ukrainians need humanitarian aid and 9.3 million need food aid and shelter.

The Russian invasion – justified by Russian President Vladimir Putin as the need to “denazify” and demilitarize Ukraine for Russia’s security – was condemned by the wider international community, which has responded by sending arms to Ukraine and imposing them on Russia in political and economic sanctions.

The UN presented 8,895 civilian deaths and 15,117 wounded as confirmed since the start of the war, emphasizing that these figures are far below the real ones.
