The federal justice of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul has imposed a fine of 10 million euros (55 million reais) for moral and collective health damage against a group of doctors who promoted ineffective treatments against covid-19.
The defendants have provided misinformation about the use of certain drugs to treat the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus even before an infection was diagnosed, including drugs like ivermectin and chloroquine, which were part of the so-called ‘covid kit’ who was also defended by former president Jair Bolsonaro.
The prosecution pointed out that the campaign under the title “Manifesto pela vida”, launched by a group calling itself Doctors of Precoce Treatment Brazil, in addition to recommending ineffective means, did not point to the possible adverse effects of the treatment of the coronavirus with these drugs, which even backfired in the case of chloroquine.
In addition to this group, the Brazilian federal court also convicted the company Vitamedic Indústria Farmacêutica, already under investigation by the Parliamentary Committee for the Management of the Covid-19 Pandemic in Brazil, describing how it earned more than 870,000 euros from the sale of ivermectin.
The other convicts come from the Alves Faria Educational Center (Unialfa) and the José Alves Group (GJA Participações), Brazilian news portal G1 reports.
The administration of then-President Jair Bolsonaro’s management of the pandemic crisis has been one of the most criticized for its reluctance to impose isolation measures and restrictions.
The pandemic, dubbed the “little flu” by Bolsonaro, caused 700,000 deaths in Brazil.
