The President of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, won an absolute majority in the Assembly. With 91% of the votes counted, the PP (centre-right) won 47.1% and 71 of the 135 seats, helping the “blue tide”, as PP spokeswoman Cuca Gamarra said.
Ayuso saw his list rise by 2.4 percentage points from the 2021 election. Enough to secure an absolute majority and forego a coalition with Vox, the far-right party that bucked the trend in municipal elections fell into. The party led by Santiago Abascal got 7.2% after losing three representatives.
“The impressive result of May 2021 was not only repeated, it went even further. This means that we did not disappoint,” said Ayuso. “The next time they want to rule with those they don’t sleep with and want to change the mattress, let them say it out loud first and then let Spain say if that’s what it wants,” he added.
The president of the Madrid region had come to power in 2019 after coming second, with 22%, behind the PSOE, but has plotted a coalition with Ciudadanos and Vox.
He did, however, help Ciudadanos (almost) disappear from the electoral map, and in the meantime helped get rid of former PP leader Pablo Casado.
Still regarding the results of the Madrid region, the left coalition Más Madrid and the PSOE are again equal in the number of deputies and, as everything indicates and contrary to what has been reported, the Socialists cannot remain within the leadership of the opposition . Both elect four more deputies.
On the other hand, Unidas Podemos, with 4.8% of the vote, loses parliamentary representation as it falls short of the 5% threshold.
