Denmark plans to triple military spending in the next ten years

Denmark will triple its military spending over the next decade with investments in the East, the North Atlantic and the Arctic, the government announced on Tuesday.

The executive wants to “significantly strengthen Denmark’s defense and security by spending about 143 billion kroner (19.2 billion euros) over the next 10 years,” acting defense minister Troels Lund Poulsen said in a statement.

According to the government’s plan, Denmark’s military expenditure will reach 6.9 billion kroner in 2024, up from 6.7 billion this year, and should triple to 19.2 billion kroner (€2.6 billion) by 2033 .

“The goal remains that the Arctic and the North Atlantic become low-voltage areas. We must, of course, protect Denmark and fulfill our obligation to jointly assume responsibility for security in the Baltic Sea.” added the minister.

“At the same time, Denmark must continue to support Ukraine in a meaningful way (…) And we must remain active and be able to continue to contribute to the rest of the world,” he concluded.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, whose name has been proposed for the position of Secretary General of NATO, had already announced on Monday a donation of nearly €2.4 billion to Ukraine through a fund earmarked for the purchase of military equipment. .

The war caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine plunged Europe into what is considered the worst security crisis since World War II (1939-1945).
