Denmark will triple its military spending over the next decade with investments in the East, the North Atlantic and the Arctic, the government announced Tuesday.
The executive wants to “significantly strengthen Denmark’s defense and security by spending around 143 billion crowns (19.2 billion euros) over the next 10 years,” Acting Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said in a statement.
According to the government’s plan, by 2024 Denmark’s military spending will be 6.9 billion kroner, up from 6.7 billion this year, and should triple to reach 19.2 billion kroner (2.6 billion euros) in 2033.
“The goal remains that the Arctic and the North Atlantic are low voltage areas. Of course, we must protect Denmark and fulfill our obligation to take joint responsibility for security in the Baltic,” the minister added.
“At the same time, Denmark must continue to support Ukraine in a significant way (…) And we must remain active and able to send contributions to the rest of the world,” he concluded.
The Danish Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, whose name has been suggested for the position of NATO Secretary General, had already announced on Monday a donation of almost 2.4 billion additional euros to Ukraine through a fund for the acquisition of equipment military.
The war unleashed by the Russian invasion of Ukraine plunged Europe into what is considered the worst security crisis since World War II (1939-1945).
