Elizabeth Holmes is serving 11 years in Texas prison for blood test fraud

Silicon Valley celebrity businesswoman Elizabeth Holmes is serving an 11-year prison sentence in Texas beginning Tuesday for fraud involving a method of blood testing from Theranos, the company she ran.

The 39-year-old businesswoman entered the low-security federal women’s facility today in Bryan, Texas, where the federal judge who sentenced her in November recommended that she serve her sentence.

The prison, located about 90 miles northwest of Houston where the businesswoman grew up, only accepts women convicted of non-violent federal crimes and has a minimum 90-day mandatory work program.

Inmates at this Texas prison can take business and language classes, watch television, play sports and participate in religious celebrations, according to the BBC. In addition, Elizabeth Holmes will have access to contact with the family via video calls, weekend visits and physical contact with her partner and children.

According to a profile published by The New York Times, Elizabeth Holmes spent the last few days before going to prison in the company of her children – one of whom is a newborn – and her partner, and has tried to restore her public image, leaving behind the facet of a technology entrepreneur showed up and presented herself as a “pious mother”.

Theranos, the startup he founded after dropping out of Stanford University at 19, promised to revolutionize healthcare with technology that, with just a few drops of blood from a finger prick, could quickly cure illnesses and other ailments.
