Attack on Lugansk leaves five dead and 19 injured

A shelling this morning left at least five dead and 19 injured in the Russian-occupied region of Lugansk, Russian authorities said Wednesday, attributing the attack to the Ukrainian army.

Russia’s Security Control Center in the Lugansk region of eastern Ukraine said the shelling hit the town of Karpaty, 35 kilometers west of the capital Lugansk.

The institution said on the Telegram platform that, according to preliminary information, the attack was carried out with High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (known by the acronym in English Himars), donated to Ukraine by the United States.

The center claimed on the Telegram platform that Ukrainian forces fired four missiles that damaged a construction site and a poultry farm building.

Russia announced in September the annexation of the regions of Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia, in eastern Ukraine, all partially occupied after the invasion, unleashed on February 24 by order of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The decision was rejected by kyiv and the international community.
