Ukraine: Zelensky hopes for a ‘clear invitation’ to NATO membership at July summit

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said this Thursday he expects a “clear invitation to join” from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) at the Atlantic Alliance summit in July, speaking of a “year of decisions” that also includes European integration.

“In the summer, in Vilnius [capital da Lituânia] a clear invitation to Ukraine to join is needed at the NATO summit and security guarantees are needed on the road to integration”declared Volodymyr Zelensky at the public session of the European Political Community Summit, which is taking place in the city of Bulboaca and close to the Ukrainian border.

He, who is the guest of honor at this meeting, which brings together 45 countries in Moldova and three leaders of European institutions, pointed out that “a clear and positive decision on EU accession is also necessary”, so this is “a year of decisions”.

Note that Ukraine is “to prepare a peace summit, which will lead the majority of the world towards the implementation of the formula of joy and peace, […] a global need”Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized that “the time has come for the doubts to disappear”.

“Positive decisions for Ukraine are positive decisions for everyone”he emphasized and argued that “when there are no guarantees of security, there are only guarantees of war”.

“We need peace, that is why all European countries bordering Russia that do not want Russia to invade them must be full members of the EU and NATO and there are only two alternatives: either open war or progressive Russian occupation”he added, speaking to European heads of government and state, referring to Georgia and Belarus.

Speaking of a “Europe united in blood” given the ongoing war in Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky added that if there is no positive response to joining the EU and NATO, “hopes become completely illusory”.

This Thursday, Moldova will host the second summit of the European Political Community, the cooperation platform for security and stability in Europe, with leaders from the European Union (EU) and other countries, now focusing on peace and energy.

Like Moldova, Ukraine has been a candidate for the EU since June 2022.

The second summit of the European Political Community will bring together about 50 leaders from across the European continent at Mimi Castle in Bulboaca, 35 kilometers from Moldova’s capital, Chisinau, and almost 20 kilometers from the border with Ukraine.

Portugal is represented by the Prime Minister, António Costa.

Established in 2022 on the basis of the vision of French President Emmanuel Macron, unveiled in a speech on Europe Day last May, the European Political Community is a platform for political dialogue and cooperation on issues of common concern and for strengthening security , stability and prosperity on the European continent, but does not replace an existing organisation, structure or process.
