A group of Russian senators is preparing proposals for the establishment of an international court to judge Ukraine, the vice-chairman of the Council of the Russian Federation (lower house of parliament), Konstantin Kosachev, announced this Thursday.
“I strongly support the need to establish our own international tribunal on what is happening in Ukraine. I emphasize that it should not be Russian, but international,” said Kosachev, quoted by the official Interfax news agency.
Kosachev defended the “special military operation”, Russia’s euphemism for war, as a way of countering alleged aggression by Ukraine and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) against Russia.
Russian authorities have previously expressed their willingness to promote the establishment of a court to try Ukrainians for alleged crimes against humanity in the context of the war, which began on February 24, 2022 on the orders of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
For its part, Ukraine has also taken steps to establish an international court to try crimes committed by Russian troops.
The Ukrainian authorities are moving in this direction with the help of the International Criminal Court (ICC).
