Iranian security forces injured several people when they opened fire on a protest sparked by the death of a young student after his release, human rights groups denounced on Friday.
Protests broke out on Thursday night in Abdanan, in the Kurdish-populated western province of Ilam, according to several non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
People took to the streets to express their anger following the death in late May of 21-year-old Bamshad Soleimankhani, just days after his release from prison.
Video footage released this Friday shows people marching in the streets chanting slogans against the Iranian regime as gunshots are heard. The same images show injured protesters.
It was not possible to immediately verify the authenticity of the images, according to international agencies.
According to human rights organizations, at least 25 people were injured.
A wave of protests erupted in Iran in September following the death of Mahsa Amini, a young Iranian Kurdish woman who was detained by the so-called morality police for allegedly improperly wearing the Islamic headscarf (‘hijad’).
Now, although the protest initiatives are less intense than at the height of the movement, at the end of last year spontaneous street demonstrations have multiplied.
