One of the worst train accidents in the country

A rare collision between three trains left at least 288 dead and 900 injured on Friday in the eastern state of Odisha. The chief executive of the state fire department, Sudhanshu Sarangi, said the death toll of 288 is expected to rise again.

The disaster started with the derailment of a Bangalore-Kolkata express train, which was on another track. Minutes later, another train, the Coromandal Express, traveling from Kolkata to Chennai crashed into the derailed train, with some of its carriages crashing into a freight train stopped nearby.

Rescuers try this Saturday to get travelers out the day after the fatal accident. “Many people taken to hospitals have succumbed to their injuries and we continue to bring the dead” from the crash site, Sudhanshu Sarangi told AFP.

It is one of the worst rail accidents in the country. India’s deadliest rail accident is on June 6, 1981, causing between 800 and 1,000 deaths.
