The President of the European Commission expresses his condolences to India

The president of the European Commission (EC) expressed his condolences to India on Saturday after receiving the “terrible news” about the worst rail accident in decades in the country’s history, which caused at least 280 deaths and 900 injuries.

“Terrible news from India. I express my deepest condolences to the families of the victims of the train accident in Odisha and wish a speedy recovery to the injured. The people of India are in our thoughts at this time of grief,” Ursula von Leyen posted on Twitter.

“Europe mourns with you,” he added in a message to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, also published a tweet in which he expressed “deepest condolences” to the Indian people after the tragedy and offered the help of the European Union (EU).

“We share your pain and sincerely wish all the victims a speedy recovery. The EU stands ready to help in any way possible,” he wrote.

A railway accident in eastern India, which involved two passenger trains this Friday, left at least 280 dead and around 900 injured, according to the latest balance of the authorities.

At least 280 bodies were recovered between Friday night and this morning, the head of the Odisha state fire department told the Associated Press (AP) news agency.
