“We have communicated directly, privately, at a very high level with the Kremlin that any use of nuclear weapons will have catastrophic consequences for Russia. That the United States and our allies will respond decisively,” the House national security adviser said. Branca, Jake Sullivan, in an interview with CBS News.
It is necessary for the US official to “take very seriously” the possible use of nuclear weapons for the first time since World War II.
In a speech on Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin called “weapons of the future” to warn NATO that Russia has an “unparalleled” nuclear arsenal capable of confronting any Western threat.
“I would like to remind you that our country also has several offensive systems and in some parts are more modern than those of the NATO countries,” Putin threatened.
According to Sullivan, the United States, both public and private, has been “clear and specific” about what the eventual use of nuclear weapons would entail: President Joe Biden’s administration “will respond decisively”.
Washington, the adviser added, will continue to support Ukraine in its efforts to defend the country and its democracy, recalling that more than $15 billion in aid for weapons and air defense systems has already been delivered.
In the interview, Sullivan also referred to the current situation of the Russian military, arguing that the announced “partial mobilization” of civilians is “not exactly a sign of strength or confidence”, but rather “a sign that they are suffering a lot in the Russian side”.
