Lula da Silva in Paris at the end of June for a summit and meeting with Macron

Brazilian President Lula da Silva will attend the summit for a new global financial pact in Paris on June 22-23, where he will meet Emmanuel Macron, French and Brazilian presidential sources revealed this Saturday.

This summit, launched by the French president, has the ambition to reshape the architecture of global finances to better respond to the challenges of global warming.

Emmanuel Macron “is delighted” to host his Brazilian counterpart at this international meeting which aims “to ensure that no country has to choose between fighting poverty and acting for the climate and nature, so that the conditions for a just transition for accessible to everyone”. said sources at the Élysée Palace, quoted by the France-Presse agency.

Several participants have already confirmed their presence, including the President of the World Bank, Ajay Banga, the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, the President of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen, the President of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, the Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz, as well as Mia Mottley, Prime Minister of Barbados.

According to a diplomatic source, the general director of the International Monetary Fund, Kristalina Georgieva, will also be in Paris.

On the occasion of his visit, 77-year-old Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will also have a “bilateral meeting with Macron,” a Brazilian presidential source said.

The agenda, according to Eliseu, is “the fight against climate change, preserving biodiversity and contributing to solving international crises”.

The two heads of state recently met on the sidelines of the G7 summit, in Hiroshima (Japan), on May 20, and discussed defense cooperation and “cultural” exchanges, in addition to the war in Ukraine, according to the office of the Brazilian President. .

Lula da Silva formally invited Emmanuel Macron to travel to Brazil in January to visit the Rio de Janeiro shipyard where the two countries are jointly producing a nuclear-powered submarine.

To date, however, the French Presidency has not communicated travel dates.

Diplomatic ties between France and Brazil have been renewed since Lula da Silva returned to power in January.

Emmanuel Macron had complicated relations with the predecessor Brazilian head of state, Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2022), especially regarding the environment, with the former far-right president often criticized for his management of the Amazon, a region fundamental to the struggle against climate change.

Before Paris and the meeting with Emmanuel Macron, the Brazilian president will visit the Vatican on June 21 to meet Pope Francis, the Brazilian presidency said.

The two spoke by telephone on Wednesday about peace in Ukraine and the fight against poverty, with Brazil’s president taking advantage of the moment to invite the pope to visit Brazil.
