Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Sunday that the war with Russia had killed at least 500 Ukrainian children, comments made hours after search teams rescued a two-year-old girl from life.
“Russian weapons and hatred, which continue to take and destroy the lives of Ukrainian children every day,” have killed hundreds since the Russian invasion on February 24, 2022, Zelensky said in a statement cited by the Associated Press (AP).
“Many could have become famous scholars, artists, sports champions, contributing to the history of Ukraine,” he added.
The Ukrainian president said it was impossible to establish the exact number of children killed by the war, due to the ongoing hostilities and the areas under Russian occupation.
“We must resist and win this war!” Zelensky said, adding: “All Ukraine, all people, all children, must be free from Russian terror!”
Rescue teams found the two-year-old girl on Sunday morning while searching through the rubble of a building on the outskirts of the city of Dnipro.
Regional Governor Serhiy Lysak said five children were among 22 injured in Saturday’s attack, which damaged two residential buildings.
This Sunday there were new Russian attacks, using drones and cruise missiles, aimed at various regions of the country, including the capital kyiv.
According to the Ukrainian air force, the anti-aircraft defense shot down three of the five drone bombs and four of the six cruise missiles fired by Russia.
Ukrainian air force spokesman Yurii Ihnat said two of the missiles hit a base in Kropyvnytskyi, a town in the central province of Kyrovohrad, without specifying damage.
