Ukraine will treat Russian defectors fairly, Zelensky promises

Volodymyr Zelensky also said that all Russian soldiers surrendering to Ukraine will be treated “in a civilized manner”.

In his usual evening speech, Zelensky urged Russians to surrender to Ukraine rather than risk being tried as war criminals after the conflict. He also said that the Russians will be treated according to international conventions and that he will not return anyone to Russia if they fear the consequences.

“It is better to surrender to the Ukrainians than to be killed by the attacks of our weapons”he added, in Russian, in a message addressed to all those mobilized by Russia to bolster military contingents.

On Saturday, Vladimir Putin signed a law saying that all Russians who defect, refuse to fight, ignore orders or surrender will now face 10 years in prison.
