Hurricane Ian hit Florida on Wednesday night. With sustained winds of up to 240 km / h, Ian made landfall along the coast of Cayo Costa, in the southwest of the state, at 3:05 p.m. local time, according to the US Hurricane Center (NHC).
Wednesday’s hurricane caused “catastrophic marine engulfment, winds and flooding across the Florida panhandle,” according to the center.
The first images of the hurricane showed the streets of Tampa and Fort Myers completely flooded. On the promenade, several neighbors filmed waves of up to five meters, and boats but also cars were swept away by the waves.
“Everything is flying outside”
Marie Bordas Thibauld, a delegate for the Union of French Abroad, who lives in Fort Myers, testified Wednesday night on BFMTV about the hurricane’s passage. She says her terrace “blew away with the roof. It’s pretty impressive.”
“The wind tore off part of the terrace and everything is flying outside,” he confided.
The International Space Station (ISS) released images of the hurricane hitting the American coasts on Wednesday, where the extension of the meteorological depression can be seen.
More than a million homes were without power as of 4:30 p.m. local time, mostly around the area where Ian made landfall, according to the specialized site PowerOutage. In some coastal counties, most residents were without power, according to the site. State authorities are calling on residents to be extremely vigilant this Wednesday.
