Florida authorities had warned. As Hurricane Ian headed toward the US state, already causing extensive damage and massive flooding, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) warned that weather conditions would make wildlife to be more active.
“You’re more likely to see alligators, snakes and bears, so remember to stay alert and give them space,” the commission said in comments cited by Newsweek.

What the FWC hadn’t anticipated, however, was the presence on the streets of Fort Myers of a shark, swept up by the powerful rising waters in this coastal city battered by Ian’s winds and rains. The impressive video, spread on social networks, shows the imposing shark visibly disoriented, spinning in circles.
As for improvised visitors, Florida has not been far behind in recent hours. On the streets of Lake County, an alligator was seen near homes. In these extreme weather conditions, the latter become stressed and it is advisable to keep a good distance from them.
Also on Twitter, a photo shows a group of about ten flamingos that have taken refuge in a room at Sunken Gardens, a Florida botanical garden. Without it, they probably wouldn’t have survived the high winds.
Previously classified as category 3 out of 5 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, Ian has been downgraded to category 1, the NHC, the US National Hurricane Center, announced.
