Former US President Donald Trump has said he has been accused of mishandling confidential documents on a Florida property, sparking a federal lawsuit that is the most dangerous of the many legal threats he faces.
“The corrupt Biden administration has informed my lawyers that I have been charged, presumably in the fake box case.Trump wrote on his Truth Social on Thursday.
“I never thought that something like this could happen to a former president of the United States who received more votes than any other president in the history of our country,” the businessman wrote.
“This is a really dark day for the United States of America,” Trump said. “We are a country in serious and rapid decline, but together we will make America great again!” he added.
The former president also accused the current head of state, Joe Biden, of donating 1,850 boxes of confidential documents in the archives to the University of Delaware, in addition to “documents scattered on the floor of his garage where he parks his Corvette.”
Another special prosecutor is investigating documents classified as confidential found earlier this year in a former office and in Biden’s home by lawyers for the current US president. The lawyers handed over the documents to the court.
Trump specified that he was subpoenaed to appear in federal court in Miami on June 13 for his second indictment, following the one in March, involving the 2016 purchase of silence from a pornographic film actress.
The Justice Department has yet to confirm the charges. But two sources cited by the AP news agency confirmed that Trump’s defense team had been informed that he had been charged on seven counts.
This accusation, which comes at a time when Trump is trying to regain the White House, comes in the context of the White House records case, in which he is accused of taking entire boxes of documents, some of them confidential, when he left the US presidency after losing the election to Joe Biden.
Less than 20 minutes after the indictment was announced, Trump began using the case as a reason to ask his supporters for more money for the 2024 presidential campaign.
When leaving the White House, after being defeated by Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election, to settle in his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida, Trump took with him boxes full of documents.
On August 8, FBI agents conducted a search of a warrant citing “preservation of classified documents” and “interfering with a federal investigation” and seized approximately 30 boxes.
