Wildfires have intensified again in western Canada, forcing the evacuation of thousands of people from their homes, while in the east, in Quebec, authorities today predicted that the fight against the flames will last all summer.
After a few days of truce, the flames reignite in the province of Alberta, with an evacuation order, the second since May, issued this Friday in the city of Edson, with 8,400 inhabitants.
In another province, British Columbia, the township of Tumbler Ridge, population 2,400, was also evacuated after a fire approached the town.
In the province of Quebec, around 14,000 people still have orders to leave their homes.
“This is the first time in Quebec’s history that so many fires have been fought, that so many people have been evacuated from their homes,” said Public Safety Minister François Bonnardel. “We’re going to have a fight that’s going to last all summer,” he predicted.
According to the Canadian Wildfire Center, of the 416 active fires in the country, about half (203) are out of control.
Since the beginning of this year, considered unprecedented in terms of forest fires, more than 4.6 million hectares have burned in Canada.
