Bad weather kills at least 27 in Pakistan

Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds has killed at least 27 people, including eight children, in northwest Pakistan.

“At least 12 people were buried after the roofs and walls of their houses collapsed,” Taimur Ali Kha, spokesman for the provincial disaster management authority (PDMA), told AFP.

In the Bannu district, 15 people died, including five brothers aged between two and 11, more than 140 people were injured and more than 200 animals died, the spokesman added.

Four districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province were hit by bad weather late on Saturday, with authorities declaring a state of emergency.

Authorities also announced that a cyclone was approaching Pakistan and India from the Arabian Sea.

Last summer, Pakistan was hit by unprecedented monsoon rains that killed more than 1,700 people, flooded a third of the country and damaged two million homes.

Pakistan’s military also this Sunday announced the deaths of at least three members of the security forces and three suspected terrorists in a shooting spree in northwestern Pakistan, near the border with Afghanistan.

The confrontation took place on Friday evening, near the village of Miran Shah, in the tribal district of North Waziristan, when the army “attacked the location of the terrorists,” the Pakistan Army’s media department (ISPR) said in a statement.

As a result of the operation, which recovered weapons and ammunition, “three terrorists were killed and four others were injured”, while three members of the security forces were killed in the firefight, he added.

The statement adds that various operations are being carried out in the area “to eliminate other terrorists”.

“The Pakistan Armed Forces are determined to remove the threat of terrorism and these sacrifices by our brave soldiers further strengthen our resolve,” the army said.
