Saudi Arabia has executed 32 people this year

Three Saudi nationals were executed this Sunday in Riyadh after being convicted of terrorism and of killing a police officer, bringing the number of people sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia this year to 32.

The three Saudis were also convicted of “possession of weapons, ammunition and explosive materials” and “planning, killing and burning the body of a security officer”, according to a statement from the Interior Ministry.

The note, which does not specify the dates of the acts, arrest or trial, states that “the verdict was upheld by the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court (…) and a Royal Decree was issued” to put it into effect. to take .

This is Saudi Arabia’s eighth execution in two weeks, after three other Saudis and two Bahrainis were sentenced to death on similar charges on June 4 and May 29, respectively.

These deaths bring the number of defendants executed in Saudi Arabia in 2023 to at least 32, including Saudis and foreign residents convicted of murder, drug trafficking or terrorism.

In 2022, the Persian Gulf monarchy executed a total of 196 death row inmates, the highest number in 30 years, according to Amnesty International.
