The Spanish far-right party VOX reached an agreement with the Popular Party (PP) on Tuesday to govern the Valencian Community, after having entered Spain for the first time in 2022 in a regional executive, in Castilla y León.
The agreement was announced by the leader of VOX in the Valencian Community, at a press conference, and later confirmed by a statement from both parties.
This Tuesday, the two parties also announced an agreement to govern the City Council of Elche, a city of 234,000 inhabitants in the Valencian Community (eastern Spain), this agreement between PP and VOX being the first that will lead the executive of Elche to the extreme right. one of the 20 most important cities in the country.
These agreements are made taking into account the results of the elections on May 28 in all Spanish municipalities and in 12 of the 17 autonomous communities, which the PP won in the Valencian Community, although without an absolute majority, and that the Socialist Party ( PSOE) had won in Elche, also without an absolute majority.
According to the leader of VOX in the Valencian Community, Carlos Flores Juberías, the agreement ensures that the ultra-right will preside over the regional parliament, while the regional executive will be chaired by Caros Manzón, from the PP.
According to the leader, negotiations will now continue, after this agreement in principle, on the conformation of the executive and the portfolios that each party will have.
The very leader of VOX in the Valencian Community, professor of Constitutional Law convicted in 2002 for domestic violence (psychic violence, insults and harassment of his ex-wife), will remain out of the Government, after statements by national leaders of the PP who condemned the possibility of that his name integrates the executive.
According to Carlos Flores Juberías, an agreement was reached with the PP that will allow VOX a “decisive participation” in the Valencian government, a party with usual far-right proposals, related to immigration or social rights considered security, xenophobic and discrimination against different groups
In the statement confirming the agreement, VOX and PP (right) have stated that they want a government that “defends and recovers” the “brands of identity” of the region, promotes economic development, reinforces public health and social services and create more support to “promote the birth rate, security and promotion of families.”
On May 28, there were elections in 12 of the 17 autonomous communities of Spain and the results were, overall, a defeat for the PSOE and the entire left and a victory for the PP, which led to the President of the Government, the socialist Pedro Sánchez, to convene early national legislatures for July 23.
The PSOE led the governments of nine of the regions that went to the polls and was the party with the most votes in four (Asturias, the Canary Islands, Extremadura and Castilla La Mancha).
However, he only has guarantees of continuing to govern Castilla la Mancha, where he achieved the only absolute majority, and he has already lost the Canary Islands, due to an agreement announced last week between the Canary Islands Coalition (CC, regionalist) and the PP, which were the second and third most voted forces, respectively.
The PP, on the other hand, achieved two absolute majorities (Madrid and La Rioja) and in five regions it depends on the support of other parties to manage to govern, waiting to know in which cases it will negotiate or rely on VOX, as already confirmed in the Valencian Community.
The polls for the general legislative elections on July 23 give the PP a new victory, but without an absolute majority, which it would have achieved with an agreement with VOX.
In recent weeks, the left has made the threat of the extreme right in the Spanish government the main theme of the pre-election campaign.
The Spanish elections were scheduled for December, when the current legislature would end, which was marked by the first coalition in the Government of Spain, between the PSOE and the extreme left platform United We Can.
