Russia threatens to withdraw from the agreement on the export of Ukrainian grain

Russia is considering withdrawing from the agreement on the export of Ukrainian grain, mainly because, according to Moscow, the clauses on the export of Russian fertilizers were not respected, Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday.

“Now we are thinking of withdrawing from this grain agreement (…). Many of the conditions that should have applied were not respected,” Vladimir Putin said during a televised meeting with Russian war correspondents.

Putin also accused kyiv of using the maritime corridors provided for in the agreement to attack the Russian fleet with drones.

The agreement made it possible to export, in the last ten months, more than 30 million tons of Ukrainian cereals and alleviate the world food crisis caused by the war.

Moscow says that although Ukrainian grain exports have resumed, Russian exports of fertilizers and food products remain limited by obstacles related to sanctions imposed by Western countries after the start of Russia’s war in Ukraine in February last year.

Last month, authorities in the Russian Federation warned that they would only honor the deal after July 18 if sanctions on Russian fertilizer exports were lifted.
