At the end of an Inter-Ministerial Committee on Road Safety (CISR), Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin confirmed on Monday that the insurance label would disappear.
“From April 1, 2024, we will remove the green insurance label. There will no longer be an insurance label to put on your vehicle, it will be registered directly by the insurance companies in the file” accessible to police and gendarmes.
This disappearance of the sticker had been announced by the government. In September 2022, Bruno Le Maire, Minister of the Economy, confirmed that he was working with the Minister of the Interior to remove it.
A “more efficient” dematerialization
“We are working with the Minister of the Interior, Gerald Darmanin, to remove this little green sticker that you have to stick behind your windscreen and that shows that you are well insured so that it is dematerialized,” the minister confirmed during a press conference in Bercy with France Assurers. on the subject of inflation.
“This little green card, the insurance certificate, is no longer useful, because we have a file of insured vehicles (FVA) that is much more effective in combating insurance fraud,” he already pointed out in September together with Bruno Le Maire Françoise Lustman, President of France Assureurs.
This file, created in 2016, is provided by insurers. It contains the registration, the name of the insurance company, the contract number and, of course, its expiration date.
Law enforcement has had access to it since 2019. And insurers must update it within 72 hours of purchasing or canceling motor vehicle liability coverage.
As a result of this inter-ministerial road safety committee, the Government also announced the total dematerialization of the driving license and the creation of a crime of homicide on the road. He also wants to “automate” the suspension of the license in case of driving under drugs.
