Fuel is an unavoidable cost for millions of French people who are forced to drive every day. However, when oil prices skyrocket, prices at the pump follow the same trend. The result, as since this summer, are prices that exceed, in certain seasons, 2 euros per liter. Faced with this increase in prices, government measures, such as fuel control, aim to safeguard part of the purchasing power of the most modest French.

But it is also by acting on the fuel production chain that the executive hopes to obtain small price reductions. While Elisabeth Borne had announced the exceptional authorization to “sell at a loss”, prohibited in France since 1963, Emmanuel Macron finally indicated that he will ask distributors to sell at cost, that is, without releasing any margin. In this context, the prices charged by fuel distributors are being scrutinized more closely than ever.
Leclerc and Système U, the cheapest all-terrain vehicle
To help you choose the cheapest gas station, BFM Business compared fuel prices according to distributors, whether large retailers or refiners-distributors. And this for the three main fuels: diesel, unleaded 95-E10 and unleaded 98.
At traditional points of sale (excluding motorways), Leclerc brand stations have on average the lowest prices for SP98 and SP95-E10 with 1,987 euros per liter and 1,908 euros per liter respectively for both fuels, according to our first statements on Monday in September. 25.
In diesel, the leader is its competitor Système U, whose stations sell an average of 1,914 euros per liter. But Leclerc – who sells a liter at 1,915 euros – is never far away.
For SP95-E10, however, the mark of 2 euros per liter is exceeded, on average, at the ENI and Avia stations. The average price per liter of SP98 at Carrefour, Casino, Esso, Avia and ENI stations also exceeds this symbolic threshold.
As for a liter of diesel, it costs on average more than 2 euros at ENI, Avia and BP stations.
Totalenergies, the most economical on the highway
On the region’s highway network, it is the oil company Total that presents the lowest prices at the pump, according to our first statements on Monday, September 25. At its stations, the average price of the SP98 reaches 1.99 euros per liter, the SP95-E10 is offered on average at 1,983 euros per liter, and the diesel at 1,984 euros. They are followed by the distributors Esso and ENI.

Our methodology
To estimate the average fuel price for each distributor, our editorial team relied on government data published every day on the prix-carburants.gouv.fr site. Our calculations are based on all service stations whose fuel is available and whose prices have been updated in the last 4 days. Only brands with more than 50 corresponding stations on main roads and more than 20 stations on motorways are taken into account.
