Technical inspection of 2/3 wheels and cars without a license: find out when you should do it

The technical inspection is extended this year to new categories of vehicles such as motorized two- and three-wheeled vehicles and cars without a permit: starting April 15 for the first registrations prior to 2017.

Important change for this year’s technical inspection. The health examination of vehicles in France is extended for the first time to motorized two- and three-wheeled vehicles, as well as vehicles without a permit.

Periodic inspection: how to navigate

For the subtlety of this first year, it will be necessary to take into account the year of the first registration (before January 1, 2017), but also the date of the anniversary: if it is between January 1 and April 15 (inclusive) , will be necessary to pass its technical inspection between April 15 and August 14, 2024.

If the anniversary date, even for registrations prior to 2017, falls between August 15 and December 31, the verification will be carried out between August 15 and December 31, 2024.

It will be easier later. Models registered between January 1, 2017 and December 31, 2019 will have to pass technical inspection in 2025. Those registered between January 1, 2020 and December 31, 2021 will be affected in 2026.

Our search engine below allows you to find the different deadlines based on the date of first registration.

Finally, for models whose first registration took place in 2022, we will resume the normal calendar, with a first check to be carried out every five years, the first time and then every three years.

To be provided in case of second-hand sale.

Please note that if you sell your vehicle in this new category in question (category L which includes mopeds, motorcycles, scooters, motor tricycles, light and heavy quadricycles), you must submit a technical inspection of less than six months from 15 April.

“There will be no particular tolerance regarding the deadlines for transactional inspections. These are, therefore, vehicles put into circulation before April 15, 2019,” Dekra, a brand specialized in technical inspections, informed us.

In reality, these are only vehicles that are more than five years old, a period after which the first technical inspection must be carried out for this category L. This is already the case of passenger cars (VP) and vans, whose technical inspection is planned starting at four. years after the first record, but not before.
