In a European automobile market in full transition to electric, the 2023 brand ranking shows many changes.
Please note that we have taken into account the expanded scope ACEA figures (Association of European Automobile Manufacturers), with the 27 countries of the Union to which we add the United Kingdom and the EFTA countries (Norway, Switzerland, Iceland and Liechtenstein).
Audi on the third step of the podium
If Volkswagen and Toyota continue to be leaders, something logical considering their positioning as generalist brands, we find ourselves right behind the German premium trio, with Audi, BMW and Mercedes in the lead.
In this geographical area we find BMW in this third position in 2022, just ahead of Mercedes. A sign that premium brands have resisted the shortage of components quite well, or at least with volumes less penalized by this exceptional situation.
This is what Audi points out in its 2023 report, in particular for France, where the ring brand confirms having recovered its pre-Covid sales level and “a healthy stock level”, to “deliver to its customers in a reasonable period”. . Audi thus recovers its 2019 new car sales volumes.
Renault surpasses Peugeot, Tesla is no longer far from Fiat and Citroën
Behind the German premium trio is Renault, in sixth position. The diamond brand thus surpasses Peugeot, fifth in 2022. A lion brand, seventh, which also sees Skoda pass ahead.
Dacia, which belongs to the Renault group, continues its good progression: the Romanian brand surpasses Hyundai and Ford to enter the top 10.
With its Model Y, which established itself as the best-selling car last year in Europe, Tesla continues to climb: 18th in 2022, the American brand is in 16th place in the ranking, thus doubling brands such as Nissan, Volvo and Seat.
With 366,326 units, Tesla is thus close to the volumes of Citroën or Fiat in this “extended” Europe, two brands of the Stellantis group in decline last year, unlike Opel/Vauxhall, Peugeot, Alfa Romeo and Jeep.
MG occupies four places
Another brand in great shape: MG, which belongs to the Chinese group SAIC. Although it does not appear in the ACEA ranking, the brand has reported sales of 234,489 units, which places it in 20th place in the ranking.
This represents more than double its commercial result from the previous year (110,350 sales in 2022), enough to double brands such as Suzuki, Mini or Cupra.
The opportunity to address the offensive of Chinese manufacturers in Europe. BYD did not want to transmit its volumes to the continent, with a first year of vehicle launches. We will have to wait for the publication of the data collected by the company Jato Dynamics or other sources: the classification is generally published a little later this year.
