3,170 people died on the roads of mainland France in 2023, a decrease of 3% compared to 2022, Road Safety announced this Thursday, February 1.

Last year was marked by a drop in the number of deaths in all categories of road users, with the exception of users of motorized personal travel devices (PMDE), such as scooters, with 42 deaths, 7% more than in 2022.

“Encouraging figures”

The interministerial delegate for road safety, Florence Guillaume, insisted on the “encouraging figures” from the National Interministerial Observatory for Road Safety (ONISR), presented to the press from the Center for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation of Bobigny (CMPR).

In detail, road mortality decreased in 2023 among motorists compared to the previous year, with 1,525 deaths (-40 deaths), as well as among users of motorized two-wheeled vehicles with 707 deaths (-11 deaths).

For the third consecutive year, the number of deceased cyclists has once again exceeded the threshold of 200 deaths: 226 in 2023, 8% less than in 2022.

There was also a significant drop in pedestrian deaths in 2023, down 10%, with 440 victims in total.

-7% of road deaths

All road networks also recorded a drop in mortality in 2023: -7% on highways, where 273 people died, -2.7% on extra-urban roads (1,881 deaths) and -2.2% on urban roads (1,016 deaths).

Despite a decrease in the number of deaths on motorways, this figure is still 4% higher compared to 2019, the reference year for road safety, compared to 2020 and 2021, where the figures fell below the symbolic bar of the 3,000 deaths due to travel restrictions. linked to the Covid-19 pandemic. The same happens on overseas roads, where 232 people died in 2023, a decrease of 18% compared to the previous year.
