Fast charging at home: how much does it cost to charge your electric car?

According to a study by terminal manufacturer Qovoltis published this Thursday, recharging your car at home is almost three times cheaper than refueling a gasoline car.

With the new rise in the price of electricity, where is it most interesting to charge your electric vehicle? According to a study by terminal manufacturer Qovoltis published this Thursday, charging at home is still the cheapest, even without paying special attention to charging times.

Qovoltis thus calculates that to recover 100 kilometers, in a car that consumes 18kWh per 100 such as the compact SUV Mercedes EQB or Volvo a few hours at night in certain very specific contracts) and about 3.70 euros in off-peak hours (more common in consumption subscriptions).

About 70 cents more

If our driver does not pay special attention to the time he plugs in his vehicle, it will cost him 5.30 euros. Which is still much lower than fast charging on the highway: 10.60 euros according to Qovoltis calculations.

And this, even taking into account the two increases in electricity prices that occurred in August and on February 1. A year ago, in February 2023, recovering 100 kilometers cost 75 cents less in off-peak hours (2.97 euros per 100 kilometers) by recharging at home.

Cheaper than filling up with gasoline

Another element that emerges from this study, like the figures compiled every quarter by the Ministry of Ecology: recharging an electric car is still less expensive than refueling a car with an internal combustion engine.

According to ministry figures, the cost of recharging at home is three times less than that of refueling 95 E10 unleaded to travel 100 kilometers: 3.40 euros compared to 9.80 euros.

“Over the useful life of the vehicle (during 10 years of ownership), taking into account the cost of the home terminal and recharging, a motorist will save 13,000 euros,” estimates Ehsan Emami, founder of Qovoltis.

However, how can you optimize your bill even further?
“You have to carefully monitor the daily mileage and wait for the recharging to take place in a fairly complete cycle,” explains Clément Molizon, general secretary of Avere, an association that promotes electric cars.
The latter advises favoring off-peak hours and why not look for more dynamic offers, if said subscription corresponds to your use. A small domestic terminal can maximize the charge during this period of a few hours in the middle of the night, to recover at least 80% of the charge. As long as you program it through the vehicle control app.
