The German manufacturer Volkswagen celebrates this Friday the 50th anniversary of its most emblematic car, the Golf, of which 37 million copies have been sold worldwide since the production of the first models in 1974.
“More than 2,000 people have opted for a new Golf every day for the last 50 years,” Volkswagen calculated in a press release.
On March 29, 1974, the group began production of the first generation of the Golf, a car with angular shapes that would succeed the legendary Beetle, completely rounded.
The Golf is still manufactured in Wolfsburg, the historic stronghold of the VW brand, founded in 1937, but also in other production plants in Germany and seven other countries.
GPT Electric and Cat
In fifty years there have been eight generations of the Golf, the last of which dates back to 2019. This year Volkswagen presented the latest update of the Golf 8, also available in a plug-in hybrid version.
For the latter, VW promises a “fully electric range of more than 100 km”, as well as “voice control and a conversational agent based on artificial intelligence Chat GPT”, the statement adds.
The brand is organizing a special exhibition on 50 years of Golf, presented at its museum in Wolfsburg, northern Germany, from Tuesday until February 23, 2025.
The Golf is the manufacturer’s best-selling model in Germany according to the market analysis company Statista, which counted 81,100 Golfs sold in 2023, a slight decrease compared to a year ago.
VW brand cars together represented 18% of registrations in Germany in 2023, well ahead of Mercedes (10%) and Audi (8.7%), another brand of the Volkswagen group, according to the Federal Automobile Agency (KBA).
