Scooters, motorcycles, carts… technical inspection is now mandatory for 2 wheels

The technical inspection of two-wheeled vehicles becomes mandatory starting this Monday, April 15.

The technical inspection will be mandatory starting this Monday for all category L vehicles, that is, scooters, motorcycles and carts. If the vehicle was registered before January 1, 2017, the first verification must be carried out no later than December 31, 2024.

To stagger the controls, vehicles whose anniversary date of entry into circulation is before April 15 must carry it out before August 14, 2024. Brakes, handlebars, headlights, leaks, tires: the control covers 78 points, a little less than for cars.

A control disputed by several bikers

The application of this mandatory control is questioned by numerous bikers who gathered on Saturday and Sunday throughout France at the call of the French Federation of Angry Bikers. According to the Ministry of the Interior, there were a total of 38,450 protesters over the weekend, including 7,000 in Paris on Saturday. Organizers counted 10,000 in the capital. However, a recent survey highlighted that 73% of two-wheeled users approve of this measure.

The price of the check is freely set by the centers for each vehicle category, but it must exceed fifty euros. Around 2.5 million people are expected to carry out their first regulatory technical inspection from 2024, according to the organization that represents professionals in the sector, Mobilians.

87 major reasons for breakdown require a second inspection, requiring return within the following two months with the vehicle repaired. Among these big problems: a worn brake disc, a non-regulatory exhaust pipe, a lack of stand or a loose license plate.

Beware of out-of-category vehicles

In the event of a “critical failure” (excessively worn tire or brake disc, in particular), the vehicle will no longer be authorized to circulate from midnight on the day of the inspection. The check is valid for three years. In the event of resale of the vehicle, a technical inspection report of less than six months must also be provided. If significant deficiencies are found, the sale must be completed within two months.

Not all automobile inspection centers accept motorcycles: inspectors must have been trained and the center must have been approved to perform them. Certain vehicles are exempt from technical inspection: old motorcycles (before 1960) or used in sports competitions such as enduro or trials, as well as quads approved as agricultural machinery. Electric bicycles and scooters are also not affected: they are not part of the L category if they are limited to 25 km/h.
