A bad month of March for road safety. 254 people died last month on the roads of mainland France, compared to 194 in March 2023, an increase of +31%, underlines a press release published this Monday.
Sharp increase among young drivers
Motorists continue to be the most affected, with 120 deaths, or 29 more. Then we find the two-wheeled motorcyclists, with 60 dead, nine more, and the cyclists, with 13 dead, five more.
“This sharp increase mainly affects roads outside urban areas, it affects all ages and, in particular, young people between 18 and 24 years old (40 dead or 23 more),” underlines the road safety statement.
Period at risk
A worrying situation, since the school holidays began just over a week ago and lasted until the beginning of May depending on the different areas.
“With travel linked to school holidays and the prospect of long weekends, I also urge all road users to exercise extreme caution, to respect safety regulations and, for vulnerable users, to bring equipment to the port. of protection,” recalls Florence Guillaume, interministerial delegate for safe roads.
