No collaboration between Renault and Volkswagen for an electric car

There will be no collaboration to produce a basic electric car between Renault and Volkswagen. But the French manufacturer will continue with the Twingo project, which costs less than 20,000 euros.

Talks between Renault and Volkswagen for a possible collaboration on an entry-level electric car have failed, a source at the French manufacturer said on Friday.

Renault indicated in February that it was in preliminary talks with the German giant to share production of its future Twingo. It will position itself in the emerging segment of small and economical electric cars, preparing for the possible arrival of Chinese models.

“We held talks with Volkswagen but, for various reasons, we did not reach an agreement on the conditions,” this Renault source told AFP, confirming Reuters information.

However, a Renault spokesperson confirmed that it is continuing its Twingo project for less than 20,000 euros, which is scheduled to be marketed from 2026. He added that the French manufacturer is “in talks with other partners.”

Volkswagen studies “economic viability”

Volkswagen management did not want to comment on this information on Friday, but reiterated that the group was studying “several options” to expand its range of electric cars downwards. While the future ID2 is expected to be around 25,000 euros, along with its cousins from the Skoda and Cupra brands, another car is expected for around 20,000 euros.

“An important criterion is economic feasibility and all possible scenarios are carefully evaluated before a possible expansion of the product portfolio. However, no decision has yet been made,” Volkswagen reiterated.

Renault boss Luca de Meo, a supporter of collaborations, declared at the end of February that it was “classic to share platforms or factories to keep costs down.” And “imagine the importance of seeing the European industry united around a project,” he said, like Airbus in aeronautics. However, Renault could do without a partner because “it will sell many” Twingos, De Meo assured.
