“I really don’t know how I’m going to raise this amount.” Driver of a 2012 Volkswagen Caravelle van, a British motorist was fined 317 times between September 2022 and March 2024 for driving in a low emissions zone in Bradford, the Daily Mail reports.
The problem: he just found out and now must pay a total of £47,000 in fines, the equivalent of €55,000, reports the Daily Mail. And rightly so, the bills were sent to his old address. He finally couldn’t find out about it until last March.
“They want everything to be paid”
“Why weren’t these fines applied so we could deal with them sooner?” the motorist asked the Daily Mail. From now on, he fears having to go into debt or even sell some of his possessions to pay the colossal sum they are demanding.
Although he tried to appeal several fines, all his attempts were rejected. “They want everything to be paid for,” he says.
Questioned, the City Council explains for its part that it is the driver’s legal responsibility to ensure that his license plate is “up to date with the data of his vehicle and his current address.”
