You don’t have to drive a Ferrari to commit serious speeding offences. A young driver of a Twingo was stopped by police last Sunday after being hit at 180 km/h on a road with a speed limit of 110 km/h. And therefore 100 km/h for probationary licences.
A confiscated Twingo
As expected, exceeding 50 km/h leads to immediate withdrawal of the license, with a possible suspension of 3 years, and confiscation of the vehicle.
A 2nd generation Renault Twingo, as seen in the photo shared by the Aisne gendarmes and the Soissons motorised brigade on Facebook.
Beyond a potentially modified engine, four versions of the Twingo II can theoretically reach 180 km/h. The top speed is announced at 185 km/h for the 85 and 90 hp 1.5 DCi, 189 km/h for the Twingo equipped with the 100 hp 1.2 TCe and 201 km/h for the Twingo RS and its 133 hp 1.6.
There is no Olympic truce on the roads of France
“And yes, not everyone is providing reinforcements in Paris,” concludes the gendarmes’ Facebook post. Indeed, with the heavy mobilization of the police in the context of the Olympic Games, some may consider themselves fully authorized… at the risk of losing it.
This is enough to invite all motorists to follow the advice of the police. During this summer period, but also during the rest of the year: respect the highway code.
