The parameters of the bonuses and penalties for car purchases for 2025 should be adjusted during the parliamentary debate, the Ministers of Economy and Industry estimated this Tuesday, October 15, insisting that we must continue supporting the automobile sector.
Priority “to automotive demand”
“We will have to explore all available financing methods in a restricted budgetary context to first pursue the objective of supporting automobile demand,” said Antoine Armand.
The new Minister of Economy came to assure manufacturers of his support for the “Paris Automobile Summit”, within the framework of the Paris Motor Show, which opened its doors to the general public this Tuesday, October 15.
At the same time, “parliamentary debate should make it possible to adjust the parameters of the car penalty,” stressed Antoine Armand. This budget is “always perfectible, that is the principle of a budget” and was prepared “in an extremely short time,” he commented.
Increased penalty and reduced bonus
According to the Government’s draft budget published last Thursday, the new penalty for the purchase of new polluting cars will affect almost all gasoline and diesel vehicles from January 1, 2025. The provision of bonuses should encourage the purchase of new electric cars with increases of 1.5 to 1 billion euros.
The automotive industry unanimously condemned these two measures and Stellantis boss Carlos Tavares called them “double punishment.”
The Economy Minister also spoke of the possible heavy fines that car manufacturers could pay if they do not comply with the new European regulations on CO2 emissions from new cars.
“We cannot find ourselves in a difficult situation, composed, on the one hand, of (European) sanctions on too few electric vehicles and, on the other, of sanctions on too many thermal vehicles,” Antoine Armand declared to the representatives of the sector. .
“Contradictory commands cannot fall forever on those who create jobs and economic activity in the country.”
“Different balances” to find
The Minister of Industry, Marc Ferracci, had previously proposed to France Inter to find “different balances”, with “a little less penalty”.
“The limitation we have in the budget is to make 60 billion savings and in those 60 billion we can find different balances, a slightly smaller penalty, but it must also be compensated with slightly greater reductions in spending in other aspects,” he stated. .
Antoine Armand assured for his part that “drastic measures in terms of administrative simplification” will also be taken and confirmed that in 2025 a new call for investment projects in the automobile industry will be launched.
