The electric bicycle market may not be in an extravagant state, new companies continue to reach the market and try to move to the most non -sports people to practice. This is the case of Ellipse, which has been present in this sector for a few years, but that has gained popularity in a month after the announcement of the end of Angell’s adventure.
The French company offers an acquisition offer that allows, by reselling its first -generation angel bicycle, obtaining a coupon of 500 euros valid on a bicycle in its range. Therefore, Tech & Co was interested in him and tested the E1, whose design is quite close to that of an angel, with a high frame. Promise Hold?
A single speed that seems
First indication: this VAE (electric bicycle) is without speed. The offer is not missing on this side, the designs too. Handlebar in the hand, so we launched the city, Paris and its surroundings, in the company of the Ellipse E1 bicycle. As expected, there is no speed. Advancing the bicycle without electrical assistance is not the best solution, even if the weight is contained: count 18 kilos. The electrical part is quite classic: there are three aid to advance rapidly and reach the maximum of 25 kilometers/hour (there is no impulse button).
This solution has limits. As in most bicycles of this type, we quickly arrive at the speed limitations imposed by law, so we will tend to pedal in a vacuum more than 20 km/h. It is a detail that can be important if you want to embark on a small walk. E1, like its other comrades, is not made to practice sports.
However, it does not make the experience unpleasant. On the contrary, even: Crossing Paris is a real pleasure whenever the increases are not too rough. Because the engine, an MVice M070, located on the back, is not as powerful as I might think. In streets like those that lead to the top of Montmartre, even with electric aid, the ascent can be complicated without having to make a little effort. With 2,390 euros, we would have appreciated a more powerful engine.
Customization of content prices
Ellipse also offers a bicycle customization at relatively competitive prices. In our test copy, we enjoy the “comfort package”, in other words, aninto of suspended armchairs and an icy seat, which offers, as its name suggests, remarkable comfort on Parisian roads sometimes a bit resistant. It is not as comfortable as conventional suspensions, but on a bicycle of this type, the package offers, it must be admitted, a more pleasant small.
Sold 59 euros, this option is attractive from a tariff point of view: the decathlon solution, for example, is available almost at the same price. For tires, which are standards, Michelin Protek 700 tires, is a bit of repentance than by the engine. These tires, sold around 20 euros, would have deserved basic, to be of better quality, except that this quality is invoiced 48 euros. In the city, the glass pieces are legion, and the basic tires sold with the bicycle are not robust enough to face.
The 360WH battery offers a range that changes diametrically depending on how electrical assistance is used. At maximum speed, do not expect more than 30 kilometers. However, most of the time we will be content with level 2, bringing autonomy of more than 50 kilometers. It may seem little, and this is, without a doubt, the case for those looking for a bicycle with a really XXL autonomy, but it is somehow the price to be paid to benefit from a battery compact with the contained weight.
It is adjusted in all bags and can easily transport to one hand, without representing an annoying weight if you walk with your watch parked once.
A really open bicycle
Among the small interesting options, it should also be taken into account that the Ellipse E1 offers indicators in the handlebar and in the frame. If you do not avoid stretching your arm, this action remains mandatory, they provide essential and visible information by those in front of you, in terms of those behind you. The headlights in the front and rear are integrated into the frame.
Finally, the E1 is above all a more “free” bicycle than an angel or a vanmoof. Almost all parts can be modified and changed with “unofficial” products. If you are the type of hacker, it is a real advantage to guarantee an important useful life on your bicycle.
In addition, the model cannot, therefore, never speak an application. There is one available if you want to know your mileage or where the bicycle is (an AirTag can also do it), but during our test week, we were fine. Especially because the bicycle is unlocked with a code that will be made with the frames of the frame.
Conclusion
With its E1, Ellipse offers such a convincing electric bicycle. If you deserved a slightly more robust engine and more qualitative serial accessories, it is an excellent surprise, either for Angels orphans in terms of those looking for a compact bicycle to walk a little and go to work.
